"Tunnel Hill Battle" paintout

It isn't too early to plan your participation in the "Tunnel Hill Battle" paintout set for Saturday and Sunday, September 19th & 20th. In association with the Tunnel Hill Historical Foundation, Southern Plein Air Painters, and the Art Alliance of North Georgia, the paintout is also part of the International Plein Air Painters "World Wide Paintout".

Last year 11 artists from Georgia and Tennessee took part in the paintout held in Tunnel Hill, GA, during the annual "Battle of Tunnel Hill" Civil War reenactment.

Art Escapes Fall 2008 (October 30–November 2)

A three-day “Art Escape” awaits you at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute of the University of Arkansas System. Held in a relaxing retreat environment atop Petit Jean Mountain, these art workshops are a great way to refresh your creative spirit and enrich your artistic skills. Choose from these three workshops, each taught by a working artist:

Study Watercolor in Italy with Jim Chapman

Gainesville, GA artist Jim Chapman is teaching a 10-day watercolor workshop for the University of Georgia’s Studies Abroad Program in the Tuscan village of Cortona, Italy.

Chapman, whose work has been featured in Watercolor Magic and The Artist’s Magazine, will lead an on-location session (“Experience Cortona”) that runs Sept. 14-24.

There are still a few openings for students, and interested artists – beginning to advanced – are encouraged to sign up.

Chapman, based in Gainesville, works with Morton Vardeman & Carlson and teaches at Brenau University in the Art & Design department as an adjunct instructor.

paint out in Tunnel Hill, GA

The Art Alliance of North Georgia is participating in the annual "World Wide Paintout" sponsored by the International Plein Air Painters group. Our paintout will be in conjunction with the "Battle of Tunnel Hill" Civil War reenactment held on September 6th and 7th. There is no entry fee - just the main gate admission which is $5.

The property has 83 acres of rolling meadows, woods, a pre-Civil War plantation house, and several other structures. During the event, there will be many reenactors in period dress, period campsites, horses and a 45 minute battle reenactment.

We're inviting all plein air painters to participate.

This is your opportunity to paint on a Florida Heritage Farm in North
Central Florida in Historical Evinston Florida. We will meet at the Wood
Swink Post Office , the oldest post office and country store in Florida.
Take a step back in time and enjoy painting the huge Live Oaks and tall
graceful Sabal palms with lovely views of Orange Lake. There are beautiful
cattle on the land as well and it is completely private so there will be no
distractions.

We will focus our study on trees for this workshop, including trunks,
limbs, texture, lighting, values, moss, vines color mixing and composition.

The closest restaurant is in Micanopy at Pearl Country Store. It is just
about 5 miles away and that is where the closest available bathroom facility
is located. We will take a break for lunch and bathroom breaks as needed.
Believe me, these minor inconveniences are nothing compared to the beauty
and opportunity of painting this landscape. It is my personal favorite
location to paint in North Florida.

Camping is available at nearby Paynes Prairie State Park and there are
several fish camps in the McIntosh- Orange Lake area which offer clean 2
bedroom trailers for 55.00 per night. US 441 in South Gainesville has many
motels available as well ranging from 50.00-125.00 per night.

Come join me to paint this beautiful private farm in North Central Florida.

All painting mediums are welcome, including gouache, acrylic, oils,
watercolor, casein and pastels

Donna says this is an intense workout sure to please everyone interested in learning more about drawing and composition. Shapes, shading, perspective, and more will be covered, and there is a special treat in store for the afternoon session. Students will sketch from a live model during the final portion of the workshop. Her incredible Victorian attire, long black curls worn up with a large flower behind her ear and porcelain skin guarantee a delightful drawing experience.

This class will concentrate on quick sketching techniques with emphasis on getting the perspective right.

After an introductory discussion of some of the ‘rules’, we will do a series of exercises, analyze some photos and get the feel of pencil meeting paper. We will work on composition, finding the ‘focus’, a full range of values, expressing the dramatic and making the drawing ‘read’. We will work with shade & shadows, and weather permitting we will tackle one of Pine Mountains “real” subjects.

Please note: The two pencil drawing workshops above are perfect companions. Together they provide students with a complete & thorough overview of rendering a likeness of any given subject.

Hand Building - an Introduction to Clay

Design considerations, tools & techniques will be discussed in the first session as students roll, cut & build a functional piece of pottery from a lump of clay. Pieces will dry and be bisque fired in time for the second class when students will finish their piece with the application of glazes. The piece will be fired once again in time for the third class which will feature an unveiling of the masterpieces along with a student critique & maybe a peek at the potter’s wheel!

Watercolor Crash Course-'Veggie Garden' Barn at Callaway

Learn to mix colors as you use a three-color palette of watercolors to create a small painting of the barn in the vegetable garden at Callaway Gardens. Beginning to advanced students will enjoy the results of this well structured approach to watercolor. All supplies are furnished for this workshop which is held in the ART WORKS classroom.

It’s made from reclaimed, micron sized particles of pure silver & held together by a non-toxic, cellulose based organic binder, which makes it maleable. Stamp, mold, carve & build to create dimensional pieces. A simple, inexpensive butane torch is used to create this beautiful, one of a kind pendant! Repeat students can create with lump clay or choose to use the silver paste. Bring a small leaf with good veins on the backside, paint several layers of silver onto the leaf & capture all the detail of the veins. The leaf disintegrates while you are firing the binder out of the silver and you have an exact replica of the leaf made in 99.9% fine silver. Be sure to avoid smooth leaves as they won’t give you enough detail. Fun, easy, unique & SILVER!

Receive step-by-step, hands-on instruction while creating a mosaic piece of art. Cut & shape colored glass pieces, glue to make your design and grout. Glass, Fusing and Lampworking Workshop

The first day of the workshop you will learn to nip & layer dichroic glass to create a unique pendant with matching earrings. (Dichroic glass has a beautiful, shimmering metallic finish on its surface. As the piece moves, the light hits it from different angles causing the color to shift back and forth between hues.) While the pendants go into the kiln for fusing, you will learn to make lampworked beads (glass beads made over a small torch) to compliment your fused pendant. Matching specks of dichroic glass will be added to the beads. The second day of the workshop you will finish your earrings and create a necklace with your pendant and matching beads. Come by the gallery and look at Jan’s gorgeous work; you’ll definitely want to try your hand at this!

PaintAmerica, a national, non-profit organization to support and promote the visual arts, has announced the Call to Entries for the 2008 “Paint The Parks” National Artists’ Competition. Paint The Parks will attract many of our nations’ top artists, with a $10,000 purchase award for the Grand Prize. Many other cash prizes and purchase awards will also be available, making Paint The Parks one of the country’s richest art competitions. The 2008 Paint the Parks100 Competition and the Paint the Parks “Mini50” provide the country’s top national venue for established and emerging representational artists to showcase their talents. The exhibition will be shown in venues such as The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, St. Louis, MO; The RW Norton Art Gallery, Shreveport, LA; and The CACEG Gallery; Estes Park, CO. Showcasing the beauty and qualities of America’s National Park system as seen through the eyes of its artists is another benefit of the program.

The Second Annual Paint the Parks 100 carries on the tradition of the long-running Arts for the Parks competition. Last years grand prize winners were John Agnew of Cincinnati, OH for his painting “Looking for the Shore” and Ray Hunter of Santa Barbara, CA for his mini painting “Lesson on the Yellowstone”.

Entries representing any of the 390 National Parks are submitted and judged within one of the three National Park Regions. The highest scoring painting from all entries is named the Grand Prize Purchase Award Winner and claims a $10,000 purchase award. It, and the top 33 paintings from each of the three regions advance to the Paint the Parks100. Other artists in the top 100 also have the chance to receive additional cash prizes and purchase awards. Recognition is also given to the “2nd 100” artists.

The “mini” competition is for works up to 180 square inches. The full-size competition accepts work up to 720 square inches. A discounted entry is available for meeting the early deadline of May 1, 2008. The final competition entry deadline is May 31, 2008. Paint Historic Charleston, S.C. with Hilarie Lambert

Thursday night is a BBQ at the Lambert house to introduce ourselves. Hilarie will be doing a demo Friday morning, you paint after that and in the afternoon as the workshop continues with instruction by Hilarie.

Saturday morning take advantage of watching the artist in the park for the Annual Charleston Fine Art Dealer's Association Weekend. Some of the best in the country will be painting there. In the afternoon the workshop continues as Hilarie follows up with each individual artist.

The workshop schedule is complete with painting from 10-2 on Sunday.

Three workshops are planned for 2007 Florida --
The first and second sessions are plein air (outdoor), with locations in the Melbourne/Indialantic area yet to be determined. These two sessions are geared for any medium, but demonstrations will be in pastel.The third session is a pastel studio class with some painting plein air on the Andre property (which is beautiful, on the intercoastal waterway, with palm trees, a wonderful pond, etc). This session is more appropriate for the beginning student, though more advanced students will still receive individual attention geared to their level. You may bring your own photographs (no copyrighted material, please), or you may paint from mine -- or from a still life set-up. Pastel is my main instruction medium and the demonstration medium, but you can take the workshop if you paint in other mediums since I also paint in oil and acrylic. Critiques will be held each day of each workshop.Emphasis will be on composition and value, with temperature and color a strong second! There will be an added emphasis on design by quickly creating a thumbnail sketch to work from, blocking in the darks and lights, and finding the colors and developing the painting . . . but, you will not necessarily finish each painting. These workshops are not just to paint a pretty painting from start to finish . . . the principles of starting and working through the painting are foremost.The class fills up in a hurry, so if you are interested, please e-mail me or call Jeanne Andre at 321-773-2434 or Lynda Trader at 321-723-2191.

Returning students are given priority, but there is usually space available for several new students each session. This is a fun class, especially inspirational with all the artwork being created around you and the discussions, questions and answers with the other students.

I am trying at this time to plan a spring plein air workshop -- the date has yet to be determined -- but most likely will be in April.If you are interested in plein air painting (painting from life) then you should be at this workshop. The cost is $225 for three painting days and 3 nights plus students share in the cost of food. Arrival day is on Thursday late afternoon, menus are planned and we shop for food, and departure day is Sunday evening. Painting days are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from approximately 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with a break for lunch of about 2 hours. The middle of the day is not an especially good time to paint.Instruction will be in pastel, my main medium. If you are interested in painting plein air with any other medium that will be fine. I paint in oil and acrylic also. Watercolorists will be instructed regarding all aspects of painting plein air, just not in your technique of watercolor. Class is appropriate for beginners and/or advanced students as each student rreceives individual instruction and constructive analysis.I have been asked in the past about co-ed accomodations -- in the future we will try to accomodate both male and female students. Remember - this is my vacation home and a "cabin" with close quarters. The cost of the class is reasonable enough for students to also pay for accomodations in nearby Blue Ridge at a motel or bed and breakfast.
